Hailey Baldwin Asked Dad Stephen If He Would Be Upset If She Changed Her Last Name to Bieber

Hailey Baldwin may go by her husband Justin Bieber‘s last name now, but she didn’t take the decision to change her surname lightly.

The 22-year-old model recently opened up about her decision in a new interview with Bustle, explaining that she first ran the idea by her famous father, actor Stephen Baldwin.

“I’m very proud of my family name,” Baldwin said. “I come from a great family with a history in this industry. I remember when I was going to change it, I asked my dad if he was going to be upset and he was like, ‘No! I don’t care. We love you. All good, everyone still knows you’re a Baldwin.’ It’s true!”

Baldwin, who secretly exchanged vows with Bieber at a civil courthouse ceremony in September, says it’s still an adjustment referring to herself with her new name. “It took some getting used to, for sure. It’s definitely strange, it takes adjusting,” she said.

In a new video for Harper’s BAZAAR she briefly joked about the change, introducing herself in the video as “Hailey Bieber” adding, “And not Baldwin anymore.”

In November, Baldwin officially changed her Instagram handle to “Hailey Bieber” and included her married last name in her bio, which reads: “Hailey Rhode Bieber.”

A day earlier, she wore Bieber’s last name on the back of her custom Levi’s trucker jacket at the opening of Levi’s new Time Square Flagship store in N.Y.C.

At the moment, Bieber and Baldwin have put their plans to hold a religious wedding ceremony on hold, as Bieber is receiving counseling for depression, multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE.

“Justin seems down and tired. He has been struggling a bit,” a Bieber source said, adding the difficulties he’s going through is not related to his wife.

“It has nothing to do with Hailey — he is very happy being married to her. It’s just something else that he struggles with mentally,” the source said. “He has good help around him and is receiving some treatment. He seems confident he will feel better soon.”

Another source said that he struggles with the “idea of fame.”

“He started off as a typical sweet, Canadian teen. He was such a great kid, honestly super sweet and very polite and nice to everyone around him. Having this huge amount of fame completely changed him,” the source said. “He had access to anything and everything and was surrounded by people who just said ‘Yes.’ ”

Bieber opened up personally about his struggles with being famous at such a young age in Vogue‘s March cover story.

“I started really feeling myself too much. ‘People love me, I’m the s—,’ that’s honestly what I thought. I got very arrogant and cocky. I was wearing sunglasses inside,” he told the outlet as Baldwin emphasized, “At night inside.”

He also revealed the issues he encountered with drugs and sex, and the role they played in his career.

But having Baldwin in his life has changed things, “He is very much grateful for his amazing life and especially for Hailey,” an insider previously told PEOPLE “It’s difficult for him that he can’t just enjoy everything and feel happy. He has been in treatment for this before.”
