Hailey Baldwin wears a casual tee and white pants to Hillsong Church
When you think of Sunday church attire, you might think of your modest midi dress, hosiery, kitten heels, and a ladylike, kiss-lock handbag. None of the traditional church-style cues were in sight when Hailey Baldwin and her fiancé, Justin Bieber, attended Hillsong Church in New York City on Sunday.
For the occasion, Baldwin continued to sport her streetwear aesthetic, wearing a casual navy-and-black-striped T-shirt tucked into her wide-legged white trousers and white sneakers to match. She accessorized with a gold watch, hoop earrings, and custom gothic letter necklace from Jennifer Fisher. She also wore her engagement ring in full view. Bieber wore an equally casual ensemble: a graphic T-shirt, basketball shorts, white socks, and sneakers.
Although it might seem like Baldwin and Bieber’s style choices are a bit too casual for Sunday church, they are perfectly in line to wear to Hillsong — a trendy church among celebrity NBA stars and musicians. Bieber and ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez have gone on dates there, as have Vanessa Hudgens and her boyfriend Austin Butler. Kendall and Kylie Jenner have also been spotted at the church on more than one occasion; so have basketballers Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant.
Hillsong originated in Australia in the ’80s and has since expanded to locations across the globe, including London, Paris, Moscow, San Francisco, and others. Its concept is far from what your parents or grandparents might deem a traditional church. In New York City in particular, Hillsong services don’t take place in traditional stained-glass churches, but in music venues like the Hammerstein Ballroom and Irving Plaza.
And they are led by charismatic pastors like Carl Lentz, who, from his Instagram, you might mistake for a rock star himself. During his sermons, Lentz wears trendy suede boots, and tees that show off his tattoos. Comfort is clearly key, and his laidback style choices also reflect those of Hillsong’s members.
“When you come into our church, it looks like the streets of New York. There are people who do not care about fashion, and [those] who look like, yeah, they’re from Williamsburg, and then guys who are in suits because they live in the corporate world. So I’m really okay with people being themselves,” Lentz tells Harper’s Bazaar.

He adds, “Fashion is a part of New York City, so therefore, it’s a part of our church,” Lentz added. “But just like poverty, and just like pain, and just like people who have nothing, that’s also a part of our church. So we’re not sitting up here trying to have a fashion show, we’re just trying to be who we are. It’s less intentional, and more, I think, genuine to who we are.”
