One ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Fan Thinks Nick Is Fred Waterford's Son
Danger! Spoilers for season 3 up ahead!
The Handmaid’s Tale has become integral to our weekend routine these days. With the third season fully underway, we are certainly making our own theories about what in the world is going on in Gilead, Canada, and beyond.
If you’re all caught up, you'll know that we’re back in Gilead because June (Elisabeth Moss) decided to stay there and resist from behind enemy lines, all in the hopes of retrieving her beloved eldest daughter Hannah. Her excruciating decision to stay in Gilead has given us insight to what’s going on with the other characters, and we definitely sense that a major revolt is brewing.
While we wait for the plot to unfold, Reddit and Twitter users have some guesses that might hold up as season 3 continues.
Serena is going to run off with Mark Tuello.
When she went to see "her" baby Nichole, she's reunited with Mark Tuello (Parenthood's Sam Jaeger), who she met in season 2. Then, he identified himself as a representative for the U.S. Government-In-Exile. Now, more than ever, people think Serena is plotting against Fred, and will end up leaving him for Tuello.

If you remember their first encounter, he offered to provide her a Gilead-free life in Hawaii but she said, "So far, all you've offered me is treason and coconuts." There's clearly some sort of tension between the two, and many find it romantic. He offers her the same thing in season 3, episode 5 and she turns him down again. However, Reddit users can't and won't let it go.
"I would not need Tuello to offer me anything twice," shared NannyDearest. "Hot damn, Serena you so dumb."
Most recently, fans emotions can be summed up by this Reddit comment: "TREASON AND COCONUTS! TREASON AND COCONUTS! It's happening! OMG, It's f--king happening! EVERYBODY STAY CALM!"
Now that we've seen episode 11 (a.k.a. when Tuello ARRESTED Fred!), this theory could play out. Many social media commenters have said, "Treason and coconuts!" after watching. However, we don't know if Serena's in on this plan, or also being persecuted for her actions.
Or, Serena is going to have a baby of her own.
Another Reddit user has a prediction that Serena will experience at least some of a Handmaid's pain when she gets pregnant with another man's baby.
"It's been said that Fred is the reason they couldn't have kids," wrote Afterbirthofjesus.
"Also said that the book indicated Fred dies in the early days of Gilead. I'm holding out hope that Serena has a kid with someone she loves and the kid is taken away. She goes to the colonies."
Dr. Yates is going to help June.
We only just met him, but Reddit fans are feeling cautiously optimistic about the doctor tending to Natalie (or OfMatthew). One commenter even suspects that he's going to help June bring Natalie's baby into Canada.
Nick is the one who took Hannah from June.
One Reddit user has a theory that the masked man who separated June from her beloved Hannah was Nick. Gasp! This would make their growing, complicated family structure even more twisted.
Oh, and Nick is Fred's son ... ?!
A truly wild one, but we need to see more of Nick! His noticeable absence on the season has taken a toll on fans, and one even suggested this theory on Instagram:
"I think Nick is Fred's son from another relationship hence why he has gained so much respect and the fact that none of them have reported each other for the scandals they've committed proves my theory," wrote @shelle_dossantos. "The scene with the angel wings Fred called Nick son ... I think it was some kind of hint."
This would be the one of the juiciest bombs of the series, so we'll keep an eye on this one.
Aunt Lydia is a "gender traitor."
In the eighth episode of season 8, we saw Aunt Lydia as Miss Clements, a divorced teacher who didn't have much luck with men. After watching the makeup scene with Noelle, however, many Reddit users suspect that the strict, cruel Aunt is actually suppressing her sexuality.
Nick is going undercover for the Swiss.
We simply refuse to believe Nick isn't helping June out. The only proper Gilead love story we've witnessed just can't go down in flames like this.

We're choosing to go with triplebreakpoint, who thinks, "Nick did help them and said he'd be their Eye/Spy so he's going deep undercover. But they can't let on. June is sad (per usual) but maybe Nick is the hero in the end."
Hannah will escape Gilead, but June won't.
All we want is for Hannah to get home safely. Heck, that's the only reason June is still in this hellscape. In a Reddit thread for season 3's episode six gaybotox theorized, "My guess is that Hannah will get out of Gilead in the final episode and June somehow will manage to stay back again." Say it isn't so!
Either Lydia or Serena will have a change of heart.
The most vile women we've gotten to know in Gilead might prove us wrong. That's the hope M_Ad expressed here:
"Prediction: out of Lydia and Serena we have two prominent female characters who uphold the Gilead regime. By the series finale I predict one will redeem themselves in some way and possibly even sacrifice themselves literally, and the other will go down hard and be punished in some way, possibly in a post conflict war human rights tribunal."
In episode 6, we did see Lydia show she had a least some sort of heart when she empathized with OfGeorge, who had rings keeping her mouth shut. And Serena did hand Nichole off to June ... but you never really know with these two.
Season 4 will take place in D.C.
Forget everything you knew about Gilead before. Washington, D.C. is more haunting than anywhere we've been so far.

That's probably what prompted Reddit user Shejidan to say, "Calling it now: next season takes place in DC after Fred gets a promotion and they find some other convoluted way to keep June in the Waterford's lives."
Season 3 will end in a war.
"I think this season will end with war between Canada and Gilead," suggested _MaryQuiteContrary. "And that Canada will have military advantage over Gilead. I think we'll see more Nick in this military capacity in the next season - and that this is how June/Hannah are able to make their eventual escape (if they escape at all)."
We were totally on board until that parenthetical phrase at the end. We're rooting for you, June and Hannah!
Mrs. Lawrence is a rebel.
People on Reddit cannot stop talking and thinking about Commander (Bradley Whitford) and Mrs. Lawrence (Julie Dretzin). In episode 5, Mrs. Lawrence tells June, "I miss the man who made me those tapes," referencing a series of mix tapes.
By now, we can confirm this is true. It's pretty well known by now that Mrs. Lawrence is against Gilead. She's helped June access documents, and even threatened to kill her husband for his role in this new world.
Commander Lawrence is too.
Along with his wife, _MaryQuiteContrary commented on the same thread that she thinks Commander Lawrence remains "loyal" as a form of resistance. "I think as we learn more we'll realize that he's an integral part of the resistance - a wolf in sheep's clothing so to speak," shared the Reddit user.

"As long as he's able to keep his wife convinced of his loyalty to Gilead, he knows they're safe, because she probably knows him better than anyone."
Again, this appears to be the truth. He shifts every now and again, but after episode 11, it seems like he and June are on the same page.
Nick isn't actually Nichole's father.
The fight for Nichole is underway, and every Handmaid's Tale fan is 99.9999% sure Nick is the father of June's baby. But we haven't actually seen a paternity test, which is what several Reddit theorists think will happen in a future episode.

Commenter bethesong put a thought in our heads that doesn't sit well: "My fear is that the baby is miraculously Fred's baby as a plot twist, and Nick will be taken to the wall for sleeping with a handmaid."
Naomi Putnam is a member of the Resistance.
“It's been my crazy theory for a long time that Naomi is secretly part of the resistance,” commented Reddit user Newtoliving101. “Probably isn't true, but it would be so awesome if she was. The way she manipulated the council to get her husband's arm cut off was savage.”

Mrs. Putnam decided her husband’s punishment (a.k.a. the hand removal), so she’s not exactly devoted to the guy. Surprisingly, several other Reddit users shared that this theory could be accurate, as Mrs. Putnam has shown some disapproval of Gilead.
Let's look back on the fourth episode again: When one Commander told Commander Putnam, “Smart girls are trouble” and he says, “Tell me about it,” you need to see the look Mrs. Putnam gives her husband (That note was made by eagle-eye fan Lixsymone97.)
