Hanuma Vihari is a regular feature in the Indian cricket team, particularly in Test matches. He started showing real interest in cricket from the tender age of 5. He was born in Kakinada, on 13th October 1993. Inspiration struck him when he watched Ambati Rayudu play in Hyderabad. This was when young Hanuma knew he wanted to pursue cricket and build his life around it.

Early Life

Hanuma studied at St Andrew’s School. His coach at the St. John’s Academy, John Manoj, was also the Director of Sports at his school. Manoj knew education at the school was tough for Hanuma’s family to afford, and therefore, he made special efforts for Hanuma to study in the school and play. Tragedy struck him when he was only 12 years old and his father, unfortunately, passed away. His school’s principal fondly remembers how the day after the tragedy Hanuma came to school and scored 80 runs and helped the school win.

Beginnings

While in school, he captained his team to many victories in inter-school matches and competitions. He even scored a double century while still under 14 years of age. He was selected to play for the state team of Hyderabad in 2010. He also featured in the Under-19 World Cup team in Australia that won under the captaincy of Unmukt Chand.

IPL Start

In the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League, he was picked by the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He had a good season and scored 241 runs in 17 games along with two man-of-the-match awards. He played for Delhi Capitals in the 2019 edition of IPL.

International Career

In August 2018, Hanuma was selected to play in the last two Test matches in England. He debuted on 7th September 2018 and scored 56 off 124 in the first innings. He was the final bowler who dismissed Sir Alastair Cook, the highest run-scorer in England’s history. He is a right-hand batsman and bowls right-arm off-break.

Hanuma is categorised under Grade C of the BCCI’s salary package. Based on this, his salary is INR 1 crore per annum. Apart from this, he was purchased in the years 2013, 2015, and 2019 in IPL. He received a total of around ₹3,800,000 from his IPL contracts.

He is a regular in first-class cricket and showcased his stubborn resistance, hampered by a hamstring strain, during the third Test against Australia in Sydney. Vihari faced 161 balls for his unbeaten 23 and helped India force a draw in tense third Test at SCG.
