Fashion and beauty have cycled through their fair share of colour trends this year, from buttery yellows right through to rich burgundy, but we're not quite done yet. Trend forecasters are already looking ahead to next year, as is Pantone, who have revealed the colour of 2025 as Mocha Mousse.
While Pantone's Colour Of The Year yields influence over everything from tech to furniture, we predict that this particular colour trend will mean big things for beauty. As opposed to Pantone's livelier 2024 and 2023 colours — a warm peach and vivid magenta — Mocha Mousse is a subdued classic, described by Pantone as "a warming, brown hue imbued with richness."
The understated shade doesn't feel as much of a bolt out of the blue as its predecessors either. Across fashion, brown tones have reigned supreme this autumn/winter season, while chocolate colour palettes have proliferated across beauty, from Kendall Jenner's recent brunette bob to Hailey Bieber's cinnamon glazed nails.
This newer iteration is a departure from the deeper browns we've seen in recent months, signalling that the new year aesthetic will pivot into more muted tones. Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, describes the shade as "sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic."
"Mocha Mousse," she continues, "extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe." In all its subtle, mid-toned glory, this unassuming colour puts forward a strong case for taking the role of Quiet Luxury's designated shade for 2025.
In an increasingly turbulent cultural and political landscape, it's perhaps unsurprising that our collective instability is manifesting in a desire to surround ourselves with colours that make us feel safe and cosseted. Described by Eiseman as "answering our desire for comfort," Mocha Mousse, in its modest manner, has all of the cosy appeal of a chic cashmere cardigan.

Mocha Mousse lends itself perfectly to a low-key luxury hair shade, with hair stylist Tom Smith having predicted 'monobrown' as the brunette trend set to reign at the tail end of 2024.
"Various references for tones of rich, neutral or cool deep brunettes are building each week, but they all share a clean, even and high shine base colour, with no obvious contrast or dimension," said Smith.
If we know to look to anyone for signs of an burgeoning trend, it's Hailey Bieber, who has recently opted for a lighter shade that looks noticeably similar in hue to Mocha Mousse. Her hair colourist Matt Rez shared the transformation on Instagram, revealing Bieber's new toasted blonde 'midlights'.

At the autumn/winter 24 shows, the Mocha Mousse beauty trend was already on the agenda. The shade was seen at Saint Laurent, where every model wore a wash of warm brown shadow across their eyelids. The mocha-toned eyes, set against a bare complexion, highlighted the tone as the key focus of the beauty look.
Chanel followed suit for its haute couture autumn/winter 24 show, with the models receiving a barely-there hint of taupe brown eyeshadow to add subtle definition. At Dries Van Noten, the makeup was focused solely on the lips, with earthy brown tones making their pledge to the trend, while at Alberta Ferretti, cheekbones were brushed with a mid-brown bronze.

The takeaway? Less is more when it comes to integrating Mocha Mousse into your makeup. Choose one area of your face to focus on, whether that be a softly-blurred brown nude lip or a light touch of mocha-tinted blush, and keep the rest of your makeup pared-back to achieve a polished look.
