Here's what we'll be calling our babies in 2017

When parents are looking for monikers to give their newborns, they often turn to popular culture for some name-spo. But according to some baby name trend experts, new mums and dads are set to look to the heavens for help in naming their offspring in 2017.

Writing for Today, Nameberry co-founder Pamela Redmond Satran predicts that some expectant parents may opt to name their newborn after heavenly bodies.

In 2017, mythological monikers such as Thor, Persephone, Clio, Orion, Morrigan, Jupiter, Atlas, Pandora and Zues are set to rise up popular baby name lists, alongside feminist heroine names like Ada, Eleanor, Zelda and Frida.

“We may still be waiting for the first female president, but parents are adopting the first names and sometimes surnames of feminist heroines as honorifics for their daughters and sometimes sons,” she said.

“Ruth (Bader Ginsburg), Ada (Lovelace), Simone (de Beauvoir and Biles), Emmeline (Pankhurst), Bell (Hooks), Eleanor (Roosevelt), Rosa (Parks).”

The baby-naming expert also believes we can expect to see more out-of-the-box baby names with trends for unique spellings, non-traditional gender identities and strong names that embody power.

It’s not the first time parents have turned to the heavens for baby moniker inspiration. In 2015, five boys were named God. Yes, God. 20 were called Lord, 27 named Saviour, and 40 baby girls were called Goddess.

And on a darker note, ‘evil’ baby names are also predicted to make a comeback with little Lucifers, Lillith (a demon of Jewish folklore) and Kali’s (the Hindu destroyer) making an appearance on pre-school registers.
