According to the student who took the photo, who goes by @Jessecaaaa_ on Twitter, their principal, Jeffrey Miller, complimented two students on their totally awesome jeans. By that afternoon Miller was sporting his own pair of the paint-splattered pants.

“Our principal told these two boys that their jeans was nice so they went back to the mall and got him a pair too…” reads the caption of the tweet that has so far been recirculated on Twitter 16,994 times.

Miller himself is on Twitter and posted his own photo:

“What are the chances that we all wore the same pants on the same day! Love having fun with our @Park_Panthers students! #pantherpride,” he wrote.

Yahoo Style reached Miller by phone and got the inside story on the social media sensation. According to Miller, he first saw the two boys in matching pants early Thursday morning as students were arriving for class.

“I saw the two of them, and they had the same pants. I saw ’em and gave them a little bit of a hard time,” says Miller. After joking around with the students, they vowed to get him his own pair. “I told them 38/30 and forgot about it,” he says.

Later that day, just before lunch, Miller got a call on a walkie-talkie to come up to a classroom. There he found the two students and a teacher. “The kids had a bag, and I just started laughing,” says Miller. Three other teachers were in on the joke, one of them going out to a local store, Rue 21, to buy the pants.

Miller confirms the two students in the photo were in class all day and that it was a teacher who went out and got the pants.

The three of them then spent the lunch hour walking around the school posing for photos and going into classrooms. “It was amazing the amount of joy and laughter this brought,” says Miller.

For Miller this is his first dose of social media stardom. “I know it’s gotten pretty big,” he says, “I’m happy for the kids. That’s the big thing for me. When they come back years from now, this is what they’ll remember.”

Miller remains in awe regarding just how popular the photo has become. “I didn’t know what Reddit was until today,” he admits.

His sudden notoriety has him thinking of ways he and other educators can use technology and social media to spread a positive message to students. “We need to be very conscious about what we put on social media” he says. “It’s important we use our social media in the right way.”

“When it’s used in the right way, we see how powerful it can be,” he says.

As for the pants, he says he’s sure they’ll make another appearance at some point in the future.

For anyone who wants to buy their own pair, the Flex Paint Splattered Moto Skinny Jean are available from Rue 21 for $39.99

Twitter, meanwhile, has been abuzz with positive reactions since the photo was posted on Thursday:
