Hillary Clinton shows support for pal Meghan Markle months after secret visit

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have Hillary Clinton in their corner.

On Thursday, the former presidential candidate shared a poignant quote from the Duchess of Sussex, which she had said while on stage at the Royal Foundation Forum in 2018.

“Women don’t need to find a voice. They have a voice. They need to feel empowered to use it, and people need to be encouraged to listen,” the quote reads.

"I hear a lot of people speaking about girls’ empowerment and women’s’ empowerment you will hear people saying they are helping women find their voices," the royal said at the time. "I fundamentally disagree with that because women don’t need to find their voices, they need to be empowered to use it and people need to be urged to listen."

Clinton has publicly defended Meghan and Harry over the past few months amid the "inexplicable" treatment they faced from the media.

"I’m a huge fan of Meghan Markle," Clinton said in October for a Sunday Times interview. "I do want to say that the way she’s been treated is inexplicable."

Clinton later added, "If the explanation is that she’s biracial, then shame on everybody."

In November, the former first lady once again came to the Markle's defense, calling her treatment "heart-breaking and wrong."

"I think even if you go back and look at social media from the time the engagement was announced, race was clearly an element in it," Clinton said in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live. "And to think that some of your — what we would call mainstream - media actually allowed that to be printed in their pages, or amplified, was heart-breaking and wrong."

In the fall, it was reported that the Duchess of Sussex finally got to meet Clinton after inviting her for a visit to Frogmore Cottage. The two even discussed the letter that Meghan wrote to Clinton when she was 11 regarding a sexist advertisement she had seen on television.

"It was sweet," a source said to People. "She got to hold him and snuggled him. She is very proud of Chelsea’s three kids and there was lots of chatter about newborns and feeding schedules."
