Ron MacLean apologizes following Don Cherry's racist rant on Coach's Corner

Sportsnet began Sunday’s broadcast ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ contest against the Chicago Blackhawks with an apology from Ron MacLean in Welland, Ont.

The host of Rogers Hometown Hockey and Hockey Night in Canada’s Coach’s Corner segment, MacLean was somber while reflecting on the remarks made by his co-host, Don Cherry, regarding immigrants on Saturday night.

Maclean echoed similar remarks in a couple of tweets published shortly after he completed his on-air statement.

“I want to sincerely apologize to our viewers and Canadians,” he wrote. “During last night's broadcast, Don made comments that were hurtful and prejudiced and I wish I had handled myself differently. It was a divisive moment and I am truly upset with myself for allowing it.

“I have worked with Don for 30 years, and we both love hockey. But last night, I know we failed you. I see hockey as part of what unites us. I have the honour of travelling across our country to celebrate Canada's game, and our diversity is one of our country's greatest strengths.”

As the 59-year-old mentioned, Sportsnet also issued an apology regarding the incident on Sunday.

Sportsnet announced Monday that Cherry stepped down from his post on Coach’s Corner.
