How to stay motivated with fitness

For many people, staying motivated 365 days a year is a challenge. Everybody has different motivators — whether you want to get fit for an upcoming race, vacation, or event, the key is to maintain consistency instead of having to scramble to find a fix.

I personally hate the feeling of having to get back into shape. I’d prefer to stay in shape all year round than to let myself go and then have to start over each time summer came around. I spoke to Nike Master Trainer Eva Redpath for some tips on how to keep yourself motivated to work out.

Declare your goals

Decide what your intention is and create a measurable action plan. For example, if you want to prepare for an upcoming race, work backwards and plan what you have to do to achieve that goal. For example, your plan could be to run three times a week and attend two training classes a week. Write it down or tell your trainer or a friend so you’re held accountable.

Reward yourself

Instead of depriving or punishing your body, reward yourself for small accomplishments to keep you going. For example, I like to reward myself with a protein shake after a good workout. Or perhaps you could treat yourself to new running shoes after training and completing a race. Whatever it is, take the time to acknowledge your hard work. Just make sure your rewards are not canceling out your progress.

Put yourself first

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you have a lot on your plate. But instead of thinking, “I am so stressed out I don’t have time to exercise,” reframe that thought. Put yourself first and take time to exercise. Something as small as 30 minutes to play your favourite sport makes a difference. The benefits and effects of activity will combat the stress you are feeling.

Plan ahead

A busy schedule is not an excuse. Be as committed as you would be for a meeting or appointment. Instead of “fitting it in” as an afterthought, make it a non-negotiable part of your routine and schedule it into your calendar.

Team up with friends

If you’re finding it hard to stick to a workout schedule, find a friend (or a few) to join you. Decide together to commit to attending a class and see the difference it makes to your own ability to commit to a workout routine.
