A Florida father is making headlines for the way he’s punishing his 13-year-old son after he found out he was bullying his classmates.
Michael Yager, of Volusia County, Fla. says he was outraged after he learned his son, Jacob, had been bullying multiple classmates at New Smyrna Beach Middle School.
In an effort to teach his son a lesson, Yager made his son stand on the side of a busy road holding a sign that said, “I’m a bully, honk if you hate bullies.”
“I figured I would teach him a lesson that would embarrass him and make him feel how the kids feel,” the frustrated father said.
As for Jacob, it wasn’t long before people started honking. Some people even pulled over to talk to the boy and his father.
Yager says most the response was mostly positive from his fellow neighbours. However, not everyone agreed with his parenting methods.
“I had one woman come up and call me every name in the book,” Yager said. “In my mind I thought I was doing the right thing, but I guess you just can’t please everyone.”
As for Jacob, he says he’s learned an invaluable lesson.
“You never know what someone can be going through,” Jacob said. “If you want to be the bully, like if you have something inside — you need to tell someone go to a guidance counselor or someone.”
