Instagram has gone crazy for this 22-year old's amazing before-and-after photos
A 22-year old woman has become an Instagram sensation after sharing before-and-after photos that chronicle her incredible skincare journey.
“I had always had some minor acne in high school, but one month in 2014, it went full-force crazy, covering my entire face,” revealed Kali Kushner in an interview with Marie Clare. “I tried literally everything: the oil cleansing method, which is where you wash your face with oil, the caveman method, which is where you don’t put anything on your face at all, plus every cream, potion and antibiotic that my dermatologist prescribed me, but nothing worked.”
When her dermatologist gave Kushner a six-month prescription of Accutane to help treat her cystic acne, she created an Instagram account to help track her transformation. Two years and 23,000 followers later, @myfacestory is still getting likes and comments from thousands of people in awe of her dramatic transformation.

Living with acne took an emotional toll on Kushner who says she felt “constantly embarrassed and upset.” All of that changed when she began taking Accutane. Kushner told Marie Clare, “It was honestly like magic…. The only downside was the side effects, which, for me, made me dry literally everywhere, and made me feel achey all over, all day long, every single day. It’d take me 10 minutes just to get out of bed in the morning, because my back was so sore.”
As soon as she began posting her selfies and opening up about her experience, the number of followers steadily began to grow. Now, Kushner receives upwards of 50 messages a day from people looking for advice or sharing their own experience of living with acne.
“I used to think it was odd, because I really didn’t do anything magical—I just took Accutane and a bunch of selfies, but now I realize that the reason people are so dedicated to following my story is because nobody actually posts stuff like this,” Kushner says. “Acne is so hush-hush and shamed in society, and having clear skin is the epitome of beauty, so if you dare have a zit or a breakout—and if you dare to take a picture of it—it’s almost like something’s wrong with you, which is so false.”

Now that Kushner has been off of Accutane for over a year, she continues to track her progress with her acne scars, which have been gradually reduced thanks to a skincare regimen that includes Vitamin C and a dermaroller.

Although she’s now acne-free, Kushner knows that her skincare journey is far from over. “I’m genetically predisposed to acne, so I’ve come to learn that my skin will have its ups and downs, and it might get better or worse some months, and that’s nothing to be ashamed of,” she says. “I know it sounds cheesy, but you are so much more than your acne, and if you want to go on Accutane to make yourself feel more confident, then do it, but do it because of you, and not because you’re trying to look like this perfect image that matches our perfect standards of beauty.”
