The Internet's favorite Carrie Bradshaw drag queen fan finally got to meet Sarah Jessica Parker

For 14 months and via hundreds of Instagram photos, Dan Clay has been moonlighting as Carrie Dragshaw, a drag homage to Sarah Jessica Parker’s beloved Sex and the City character. Clay has recreated iconic fashion moments, such as Carrie Bradshaw in her gifted Oscar de la Renta gown, her “I can’t believe I just ran into my ex” cowboy hat, and of course, her classic bus advertisement tutu. Clay even covered New York Fashion Week, all in character as Carrie Dragshaw.

Clay has amassed over 90,000 fans on Instagram, including a few well-connected followers: the team at Watch What Happens Live. Last night, Clay appeared on the show’s “Drag Pageant” segment dressed as Carrie Bradshaw — alongside Sarah Jessica Parker.

Parker had some lovely words for her most devoted fan: “What [Clay] has done today is nothing. If you go to Dan’s Instagram page, it’s kind of staggering what he does. It’s such a treat that you’re here.”

Clay typically writes in Carrie’s voice on his Instagram photos, but he broke from protocol to share a clip from the show and his emotional reaction. “I’m overflowing with gratitude and it seems to be crowding out the words I might find to express how magical, and incredible, and fun, and surreal and marvelous and inconceivable and fabulous and unforgettable and ohmygod and and and !!!! And to @sarahjessicaparker – for as long as I breathe I will never forget your kindness,” he wrote.

As Clay tells Yahoo Lifestyle, “It was one of the most wonderful moments of my life, to be honest. It was amazing to hear her appreciate it.”

It felt like a dream come true, even though I never could have dreamt it. Carrie Dragshaw started out as a Halloween costume, says Clay, and the overwhelmingly positive reaction inspired him to create more and more Bradshaw-inspired outfits. He first put on the tutu during the 2016 election, and the costume was “an escape for me and a way to spread a little positivity and love.” Plus, he said, “obviously I’m a big fan of Sex and the City, so it was a great excuse to watch the show.”

Now that Carrie Dragshaw has met Carrie Bradshaw, where does Clay go from here? “I was planning to do the next Carrie look this week. But now, the look that I was going to do next just doesn’t seem significant enough, so I have to go back to the drawing board,” he says.
