A University of Iowa defensive lineman was arrested early on Saturday morning after he allegedly mistook an occupied police car for his Uber home.
Brady Reiff, a defensive lineman for the Hawkeyes, approached a parked police car in downtown Iowa City, Iowa, around 2 a.m. on Saturday and attempted to enter through the passenger side door, according to the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
Reiff then saw that the seat was occupied, and attempted to move to the back door. The officer inside the car asked Reiff what he was doing, and he asked for a ride home.
“He thought that was our job,” the police report said, according to the Gazette.
The officer then asked if Reiff thought he was an Uber, and the 22-year-old replied “Yes.”
Reiff was arrested and taken to the Johnson County Jail. His blood alcohol content level was .204 — more than twice the legal driving limit.
“We are aware of the incident and are currently gathering additional facts,” Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said in a statement. “Brady is subject to the rules and regulations of the UI Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, and the rules and regulations of [head coach] Kirk Ferentz and his program.”
Ferentz announced Monday that Reiff will be suspended for the Hawkeyes’ season opener on Sept. 1 against Northern Illinois.

“I’m not pleased about what we learned about Brady Reiff this weekend,” Ferentz said at the Big Ten media days in Chicago. “Had a chance to visit with him today. He’s going to go through a couple steps but … he will be suspended for the first game, among some other activities.”
Reiff recorded 13 tackles, one sack and one interception last season for the Hawkeyes. The 6-foot-3, 272-pound junior is expected start at defensive tackle this fall.
