Iranian TV Agency Added More Layers to Oscar Attendees’ Skimpy Dresses
Anousheh Ansari, an Iranian-American engineer, accepted the award for Best Foreign Language Film for The Salesman at the 89th Academy Awards. The film’s Iranian director, Asghar Farhadi, chose not to attend in protest of President Trump’s controversial executive order on immigration.
While airing the acceptance speech, an Iranian television network — the Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA) — Photoshopped more clothing onto women featured onstage during the introduction and acceptance of the award.
Charlize Theron, who presented the award alongside Shirley MacLaine, was completely covered up by the network, transforming her gold lamé Dior gown onscreen.
At one point, the network censored most of the star’s upper half.
Ansari’s skin, which was slightly exposed by her one-shoulder dress and matching shawl, was also censored by the network — while she accepted the Oscar on behalf of the director.
The poor attempt to cover the women did not go unnoticed. One user, Masih Alinejad, uploaded the coverage to Facebook, where it has amassed 115,000 views and a number of harsh comments.

“Oh for goodness sake, this looks like it was done by a petulant ten year old. News flash – women have arms too!” user Catherine Robilliard commented. “It’s just so ridiculous and laughable. Laws will change one day for you beautiful women of Iran,” another user, Joanna Pritchard, added.
Alinejad spoke to the New York Times’ Women in the World about the video she uploaded. “This is the Islamic Republic of Iran, which forces girls as young as age seven to be covered up,” she told the publication. “While many of us, including Americans, are expressing our opposition to Trump’s Muslim ban, we also have to be louder and clearer about our condemnation of Islamic Republic of Iran’s ban on women who can’t enter Iran without hijab.”
Theron and Ansari have yet to comment on the matter.
