Isaac Mizrahi Signs Up for ‘Peter and the Wolf’ at Guggenheim’s Works & Process in December
DESIGNER IN WOLF’S CLOTHING: Isaac Mizrahi will return to Works & Process at The Guggenheim to narrate “Peter and the Wolf” for 10 performances in December. The designer has been telling the tale for a decade and he approaches the storytelling with signature gusto.
Mizrahi not only narrates but he also directs, designs the set and creates the costumes for what is always an unprecedented interpretation of Sergei Prokofiev’s children’s classic. This season’s cast will perform choreography by John Heginbotham. Brad Lubman will conduct the Ensemble Signal in the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Peter B. Lewis Theater at the Guggenheim.
The choreographer is also preparing for Dance Heginbotham’s world premiere with violinist Joshua Bell and the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. His five-year-old troupe will accompany Bell and the NSO for a world premiere set to Lalo’s “Symphonie espagnole.”
The designer will be at the Fifth Avenue museum on Oct. 27 hosting the Works & Process Rotunda Projects Gala. The event is a benefit for the new residency and commissioning program “Works & Process Rotunda Projects.” The initiative is an extension of Works & Process that will present an assortment of performances in the Guggenheim’s rotunda. Michelle Dorrance, a 2015 MacArthur Fellow, will kick off the program Feb. 16, leading a cast of dancers and musicians during a three-week residence. Her plan is to use tap dancing and percussion to create a performance soundscape that uses the rotunda as a musical instrument. Guests at the Oct. 27 gala will get a look at what Dorrance is developing.
The American Ballet Theater’s principal dancer Daniil Simkin is penciled in to start at five-week residency at the museum starting September 5. He and his cast will incorporate infrared motion sensors, enhanced by 3-D mapped visuals, projected onto the surface of the rotunda in their performance with commissioned choreography by Alejandro Cerrudo. Gala attendees will also get a sampling of what is supposed to be an immersive experience that meshes technology, music, visuals, fashion, design and dance.
