According to the Hollywood Reporter, the first daughter has hired New York stylist Cat Williams, the former assistant of Micaela Erlanger, who has styled a number of red carpet looks: Lupita Nyong’o’s Calvin Klein white halter gown and pale blue Prada dress, Jared Leto’s black suit with red piping, Michelle Dockery’s gold-and-white Alexandre Vauthier couture gown, and Meryl Streep’s Elie Saab off-the-shoulder embroidered top and trousers. Erlanger also styled Trump in a red crepe Ralph Lauren jumpsuit, weeks after giving birth to her third child, for the 2016 Met Gala.

While it’s customary for first ladies to hire stylists — Michelle Obama relied on Meredith Koop for a number of looks, from her bright-yellow Kenzo dress to her black Christoper Kane dress — it’s not clear whether the service has been used by first daughters in the past. Despite Malia Obama’s reputation as a style influencer (a $440 Alice and Olivia dress she wore in 2015 while stepping off a plane in London sold out after photos surfaced, according to the New York Times), a White House spokesperson declined to confirm whether or not the teenager used a stylist.

With a growing list of designers who have refused to dress the first family — Sophie Theallet, Zac Posen, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Phillip Lin — Williams’s job may come with a learning curve. What’s more, it’s unclear who’s paying for Williams’s services, especially since Trump isn’t taking a salary with her White House gig. According to an NPR interview with Trump’s lawyer, she will simply be “the eyes and ears of her father,” while advising him on topics related to women.

Fashion has been a shaky subject for Ivanka Trump lately. Not only have retailers that sell her clothing and jewelry landed on the infamous #GrabYourWallet list, a grassroots attempt to ban businesses that support the first family, Trump’s style decisions have been labeled insensitive. In January, she posted a photo of herself wearing a $5,000 silver Carolina Herrera ball gown while airports around the country detained people from the president’s travel ban list. She also saw heated reactions on social media after wearing a red dress that featured a detail that looked like a black bra strap while her father addressed a joint session of Congress.
