Ivanka Trump is taking heat for her father's controversial remarks about women: 'Her silence is so deafening'

On Wednesday, Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley took to social media to praise Ivanka Trump for “advancing global women’s economic empowerment.” The senior White House adviser and first daughter might want to avoid her other Twitter mentions, however — as they’re mostly tweets slamming her for appearing to stand idly by in the face of her father’s remarks about women during an evening press conference.

When asked for his thoughts on the accusations of sexual assault facing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump referenced his own allegations. He claimed that “four or five women” — the number is actually 19 — were paid to make “false statements” and say “bad things” about him.

The press conference on Wednesday also saw POTUS dismissing the allegations against Kavanaugh — “What they have done to this man is incredible,” he told reporters — while making claims about the support he’s received from women who he says are “angry” with the delay in Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

He added that he received 52 percent of the vote in 2016 from women, but that figure only represents white women; overall he received 41 percent, as very small percentages of minority women gave him their vote.

The comments have sparked outrage, and many critics — including West Wing and Get Out star Bradley Whitford — are now looking to the president’s elder daughter, Ivanka, to advance her pro-women platform by speaking up.

It’s unlikely that the first daughter will issue a statement, given the way she previously shut down “inappropriate” questions about the sexual harassment and assault allegations against her father. She has also not yet publicly addressed a #DearIvanka plea from multiple female celebrities to support the first woman to accuse Kavanaugh, Christine Blasey Ford.

Both she and first lady Melania Trump have raised speculation that they’re using their wardrobes to subtly communicate solidarity with women. While Ivanka recently wore a white pantsuit associated with the women’s rights and suffragette movements, the black dress her stepmother wore to the U.N. this week had some wondering if it was connected to the black dress code of the #BelieveSurvivors campaign.

Clothes aside, the fact remains that neither woman has spoken out about the Kavanaugh controversy or Trump’s divisive comments — and it’s not going unnoticed.
