Kathy McKeon served as Jackie Kennedy's personal assistant (and sometime nanny) during a time of great change for the former first lady. From 1964 to 1977, McKeon was often referred to as Jackie's girl, always on-hard in moments of joy, like Kennedy's courtship with Aristotle Onassis, as well as moments of heart-wrenching sorrow, as when Jackie's confidant and brother-in-law Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1968.

This week's People magazine features an interview with McKeon and an excerpt from her forthcoming memoir describing how she comforted young Caroline and JFK Jr. after their Uncle Bobby's tragic murder. Here, she describes her heartbreaking conversation with Jackie following Bobby's death.

“Will you talk to John and Caroline?” she asked, her voice a torn whisper. “Their uncle passed away.”

“I’m so sorry Madam,” I murmured.

“I know,” she said bitterly. “Same story all over again.”

I found John and Caroline crying in John’s room.

“Your Uncle Bobby is up in heaven,” I tried to console them. “Let’s choose a dress for you to wear,” I suggested gently to Caroline.

She knew without asking that I meant for the funeral.

“It was a very sad day, it was a sad day for everybody,” McKeon told People's Liz McNeil. Caroline and JFK Jr. “were very upset that Uncle Bobby was gone,” she said. “He was very, very good to them.”

Jackie's Girl is available for pre-orders now;itwill go on sale May 9. Pick up a copy of this week's People for the full excerpt.
