Jaden Smith and the model Estella Boersma are covering the January issue of Vogue Italia, paying tribute to its beloved editor-in-chief, Franca Sozzani.

Sozzani’s passing at the end of 2016 shocked the fashion world to its core. Designers, stylists, and many of fashion’s most influential posted heartfelt tributes mourning the passing of Sozzani, an enviable force in the fashion industry.

Sozzani, who was born in Mantua, Italy, began her career at Vogue Bambini in 1976, and moved on to lead Vogue Italia in 1988. During her 28-year-tenure at Vogue Italia, the brand not only challenged notions of beauty and fashion, but gave photographers and writers the freedom to explore and write. Her leadership produced some of fashion’s most controversial and liberating covers, including the July 2008 “All Black” issue of Vogue Italia, which opened the door for a discussion on women of color in the fashion industry. Sozzani also demanded body diversity in fashion, and constantly challenged the notions of what was acceptable.

Vogue Italia’s latest cover, shot by Bruce Weber and styled by Paul Cavaco, pays homage to the fashion editor and a new era at Vogue Italia. Jaden Smith wears an all-black Dior Homme ensemble, while the background proclaims, “A Brave New World.”
