On Monday night's episode of Dancing With the Stars, frontrunner James Van Der Beek let audiences in on the extremely emotional and painful circumstances he and his family dealt with this week. Earlier in the season, Van Der Beek announced that he and his wife were expecting their sixth child together, but during an incredibly emotional clip on Monday night's show, the actor shared that his wife had experienced a miscarriage.

"My wife Kimberly and I went through every expecting parents' worst nightmare — we lost the baby," Van Der Beek said. "The little soul that we had expected to welcome into our family took a shortcut to whatever lies beyond.

"You never know why these things happen — that’s what I’ve been telling my kids — all you know is that it brings you closer together. It breaks you open, it opens up your heart, it deepens your appreciation, it makes you more human."

Despite the tragedy that struck his family, Van Der Beek still took to the dance floor for an incredibly emotional routine with his partner Emma Slater.

"I really didn’t think I’d be dancing tonight but Kimberly from her hospital bed said to me ‘I am not done watching you dance," Van Der Beek said. "We’re dancing to 'Take Me to Church,' which is all about human connection and that song has taken on a whole new meaning for me this week. When words fail, you sing. When there are no words, you dance."

Van Der Beek dedicated the dance to his wife, who was not at the show.

"Kimberly I’m dancing for you, I’m dancing for us, so here we go babe," he said.

Fans at home felt the emotion from Van Der Beek's performance, with a few noting they shed tears over the dance.

Van Der Beek broke down in tears after he finished the dance and he received a standing ovation from the audience and judges alike.

"Thank you for bringing your emotions to the dance floor this week," judge Carrie Ann Inaba said.
