Jane Fonda has become just as famous for her activism as she has for her acting, which is no easy feat considering her work spans six decades and includes two Academy Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, seven Golden Globes, two Tony awards and five Emmy nominations, to name a few. If there was an award for eternal youth, we’re quite sure Jane would have nabbed that one, too.

Now 83, Jane is just as fearless with her activism as she is with the roles she chooses, even getting arrested—she’s never been afraid to spend a night in jail for the causes she believes in. But that doesn’t mean she can’t have fun with beauty. “It’s important for people to know that because you’re an activist and a feminist doesn’t mean that you can’t look good,” she has said. “Being an activist is fun. It’s not like you have to eat your broccoli. It’s actually full of joy and fun and making friends and having a good time.” Jane even has an activism makeup routine—and plenty of other beauty secrets right this way.

She switches up her moisturizer.

Just like us, Jane looks to celebs for beauty wisdom. She told Glamour, “Catherine Deneuve told me a long time ago, like in the ’60s, that she switched up her skin creams and didn’t always use the same one. And I’ve heard in the subsequent decades from people who seem to be in the know that this tends to be good for you. So I do that—all to avoid dry skin. My current favorites in rotation are Uncle Bud’s Face Lotion, L’Oréal Age Perfect and Mila Moursi skin lotion.”

She knows the value of sunscreen.

She regularly slathers on SPF to safeguard her skin from damaging UV rays. "Don't get too much sun,” she has advised. “I say as the ultimate sun worshipper. But after skin cancer and many operations later, I can say stay out of the sun." To play it safe, Jane has saidshe sees a derm every six months for skin checks.

She takes care of her hair.

Jane is all about caring for your hair just as you do your skin. “Healthy hair always looks good, so it’s important to look after your hair,” she told Byrdie. “Use the right products and take care of your hair like you would your skin.”

She’s also embraced her gray. Letting your gray grow in doesn’t mean you can’t still be sprightly and Jane is the poster child for that one. “I’ve let my hair go gray,” she told Allure. “But my hairstylist is very talented and he styles my hair in a way that is very youthful and chic-looking.”

She has fun with beauty, even when protesting.

Yes, she really does have a protest beauty routine. “If I’m gonna go out to a large protest or something, I highlight under my eyes,” she has said. “I’ve got dark circles, and I need to put highlight under my eyes… I put some blush on, I put a black liner on my eyes, I curl my eyelashes, I put black mascara on the upper lashes and lower lashes. As you get older, the line of your lips gets less distinct, so I have to use a lip pencil, and then I put lipstick on. Sometimes I use a bright red lipstick, sometimes I use a pale pink lipstick. That’s my activism face.”

She’s serious about hydrating her skin.

“It’s just about keeping my skin from being dry,” Jane has said. “As I’ve gotten older, my skin and hair have become even drier. So keeping moisturized and protected with sunscreen is pretty important.”

She knows when to see the pros.

Experts deliver when it comes to seeing real results, so Jane would see her facialist Mila Moursi every two weeks. “She’s the best in the world; she’s got magic hands,” Jane has said. “It’s the most unbelievable facial. It’s very muscular—it feels so good and it just awakens your skin.”
