J.Crew Retraces Its History for Spring 2017

J.Crew has been having a tough go of it lately, with seemingly ever-mounting debt and an inability to attract the millennial market. So for spring 2017, the brand — helmed by style icon Jenna Lyons — dug deep into its archives to give the season’s designs a preppy, heritage feel. Was it successful? Read on for our breakdown, below.

The Designer: You might recognize Jenna Lyons from her signature look — a pulled back-slick ponytail, black rimmed frames, and a chic, colorful pant suit. She’s a Parsons New School of Design graduate who quickly rose to the top of J.Crew’s executive power ladder after starting as a junior designer in 1990. Lyons is currently both the company’s creative director and president.

The Scene: A sun-drenched, crisp white room at Spring Studios in Tribeca served as the back drop of J.Crew’s SS17 presentation. Basically the button-down shirt of event spaces.

Can I Kick It: At the top of our must-have shoe list are these criss-crossed satin heeled sandals with wrapped ankle ties; we really just can’t get enough of ballerina detailing. It’s the perfect spring shoe to complement any outfit and pirouette off into the sunset.

#WantItNow: We’re obsessed with the array of eclectic jewelry presented at J.Crew. Seen here are the modern monocle gold hoop earrings, stone pendant necklaces, gold ring bands, and minimalist metal cuffs. We’ll be layering them all come next season.

Model Moment: The models at J.Crew this season were far from traditional. Lyons wanted to bring the brand’s focus back to its roots in an effort to appeal to the people who support and embody the brand — so she used a generally unheard of variety of models. Among them were an eclectic mix of men, women, and children between the ages of 13 to 70 who J.Crew employees, friends of the brand, students, writers, interior designers, a metal smith, a sailor, a humanitarian, and more.
