Jim Carrey gives confusing, existential interview: 'We don't matter'

Jim Carrey doesn’t believe in icons, yet he walked the red carpet at the Harper’s Bazaar ‘Icons’ party on Saturday night because he wanted to find the “most meaningless thing” he could attend.

Talking to E! News’ Catt Sadler, Carrey, dressed in a midnight blue tuxedo, slammed the event’s theme. After being asked if he believes in icons, the comedian replied, “Boy, that is just the absolute lowest-aiming possibility that we could come up with. Do you believe in icons? I don’t believe in personalities. I don’t believe that you exist, but there is a lovely fragrance in the air.”

The actor then broke into a James Brown impression, leaving Sadler scratching her head. She proceeded to ask him, “But Jim, you got really dressed up for the occasion; you look good.” To counter the contradiction, Carrey noted that he didn’t actually get dressed up because “there is no me. There’s just things happening.”

Attempting to shift the conversation to more serious topics and seemingly get on Carrey’s level, Sadler said, “What’s happening in our world right now because there is a lot of news that actually is relevant and is not that uplifting.” To that, Carrey said this world is “not our world” and “we don’t matter,” before squeezing Sadler’s shoulder and walking away.

Some fans have suggested that Carrey was simply in character as he’s reportedly set to play psychedelic astronaut Terence McKenna in an upcoming film.

Others have shown their support for the idiosyncratic interview, saying Carrey was dropping “truth bombs” about the fashion industry.

Commenting on the attention the interview received, Sadler tweeted, “For the record, I loved him before the interview and I love him after. Thank you for the unexpected dance Mr. Carrey!” She also spoke about the experience on her TV show Monday afternoon.
