Joanna Gaines Wears a Daily Uniform
Good news for people who agonize over their outfits each morning: Celebs feel your pain.
That’s the case for Joanna Gaines, the star of HGTV’s Fixer Upper, who recently shared a style epiphany on Instagram. “I finally hung my clothes up from this week and noticed that gray-blue button-downs and grayish V-necks are clearly my favorite because I don’t have to think much about them,” she captioned the photo of her monochromatic long-sleeve tees and button-down shirts.
She added, “I’m sure that anyone who saw me this week would assume I was basically wearing the same outfit everyday.”

Gaines’s post received more than 100,000 likes and lots of comments agreeing with her. “Yes! When you’re busy, it’s best to go classic,” wrote one Instagram user. Others wrote, “Those are the colors in my closet too!” and “Too much work and no time to pick clothes out!”
“I tend to do the same thing, even though I’m naturally drawn to bright, vibrant colors,” wrote another Instagram user. “I call it the uniform.”
Gaines is not alone in her minimalist approach to fashion. Jenna Lyons, Karl Lagerfeld, Mark Zuckerberg, and Kim Kardashian all stick to the same color scheme, if not specific outfits.
There’s no doubt that fashion plays a significant role in many women’s lives. Personal style can be a creative expression of one’s personality, social identity, or culture and can convey perceived characteristics such as competency and intellect. Research even shows that wearing certain articles of clothing or colors can affect one’s job performance and physical strength.
That said, there are also benefits to a “fashion uniform.” Breaking free of the pressure to adhere to ever-changing fashion rules can liberate you to focus on other areas of your life. It’s even a time-saver. Barack Obama once told Vanity Fair that he only wore suits in two colors. “You’ll see I wear only gray or blue suits,” he said. “I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.”
If the idea of a fashion uniform appeals, you don’t have to run out and buy seven versions of the same shirt. Experimenting with a signature accessory or embracing one color scheme may help you celebrate your true individual style.
