In the dark cloud that has been 2017, it’s hard to remember that sometimes, people from different parties can be friends - and that human decency as a general concept still exists. So when Joe Biden appeared on The View, his emotional exchange with panelist Meghan McCain moved the rest of the panel to tears.

The McCain family and the Biden family have been close for decades, starting when Biden and Meghan’s father, Sen. John McCain, were colleagues in the Senate. Now, Sen. McCain has been diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer, the same cancer that killed the former vice president’s son, Beau.

“I think about Beau almost every day, and I was told that this doesn’t get easier, but you cultivate the tools to work with this and live with this,” McCain said, breaking down in tears. Biden got up and moved to sit next to her. “One of the things that gave Beau courage was John,” Biden said. “Beau talked about your dad’s courage. Not about illness, but about his courage.”

Biden talked about current scientific advances in the fight against cancer, and gave a hopeful message about how people on opposite sides of the aisle can forge close friendships. “Her dad is one of my best friends,” he said. “We’re like two brothers who were somehow raised by different fathers or something, because of our points of view.”

McCain said her family called Biden and his wife, Jill, immediately after the cancer diagnosis. “Thank you for your compassion,” she said. “You’re a great hope to me and everyone else in the country right now.” She echoed those sentiments on Instagram after the show:

Her father tweeted that the Biden family “[serves] as an example and source of strength for my own family.”
