John Stamos may have played a lovable dad of twins on Full House, but the 54-year-old actor has never been a dad himself. But that's about to change. He announced to People in this week's cover story that he and his fiancée, Caitlin McHugh, are expecting a child.

Stamos said that he and McHugh, 31, knew they wanted to start a family, and didn't want to wait until they tied the knot. "[Caitlin said,] 'Maybe we should have a kid [before we get married],' and I said, 'Why?'" Stamos said. "[Caitlin responded,] 'Because you're old." The two were engaged at Disneyland in October.

"The look on John's face when I told him we were pregnant was priceless," McHugh told the magazine. "It was the look of a man who has wanted a family of his own but wasn't sure it was going to happen for him. Now it is!"

Stamos and McHugh want to be surprised by the baby's sex, so they don't know if they are having a boy or a girl. But there's one thing he knows for sure: "I'll be a fun dad," he said. "I've been practicing for a long time. I've done every schtick thing you can do with a baby on TV, every slow Elvis song, bits and jokes, diaper gags, and I'll probably just do all that stuff."

In an interview, Stamos tearfully says there's one thing he regrets about waiting to have a baby. "I had the best father in the world, and it kills me that my parents aren't here to be a part of this," he said. "But I know it probably wouldn't be happening if they weren't up there, you know."
