Jon Bon Jovi's comments about Kim Kardashian are not OK

According to Entertainment Tonight Canada, Jon Bon Jovi revealed he isn’t a fan of reality TV – and more specifically Kim Kardashian – in an out of touch interview with Australia’s The Sunday Project.

I think it’s horrific that we live in that world and I can tell you I’ve never given 60 seconds of my life, ever, to one of those Housewives of Blah Blah and Kardashians,” he said.

I don’t know their names, I’ve never watched 60 seconds of the show, it’s not for me.”

While some of us would rather not keep up with the Kardashians and don’t find pure joy in Kylie Jenner gifting mom, Kris, a $250,000 “dream car,”, or snacking on popcorn while Kourtney and Kim go off on each other’s parenting style, there’s no reason to personally attack the family of entrepreneurs for their relevancy.

In true chauvinistic fashion, the 56-year-old couldn’t just leave his comments about the Kardashians at admitting he doesn’t watch their show — he felt the need to accredit his distaste for the family by shaming Kim for her foray into the public eye.

What’s gonna be in your autobiography? ‘I made a porno and guess what, I got famous.’ F—, sorry, I’ll pass,” he said.

Suggesting Kardashian find new hobbies, the singer did what many default to while criticizing someone they don’t like — hint at intellectual short-comings.

Go and write a book, paint a painting, act, study, sing, play write,” he allegedly said.

In the same way that having interests that include beauty or fashion suggest a lesser intelligence, Kardashian is being attacked for her sexuality in a sex tape with ex Ray J, as well as her reality TV stint (which, truthfully, shows major entrepreneurial prowess).

Her sex tape is a common criticism for the celebrity mom.

When it came to her marriage to husband Kanye West, Kardashian admitted he was warned not to date her because of the sex tape. This kind of criticism is so commonplace for the 38-year-old that she’s been responding to these comments for most of her career.

You know, I think that’s how I was definitely introduced to the world,” she said on Oprah’s Next Chapter in 2012.

“It was a negative way, so I felt like I really had to work 10 times harder to get people to see the real me.”

Much like many women, Kardashian has been forced to defend her success – and, at some points, her existence.

“I have to live with the choices I have made,” she said. “And I can’t dwell on it.”

In a world still reeling from Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony against Brett Kavanuagh, comments like Bon Jovi’s are especially problematic.

Women remain under societal pressures to adhere to patriarchal standards and are often shamed for expressing any kind of sexuality or opinion — traits men are praised for possessing. And that’s not to mention shame for interest in “fluffy” things – like fashion, beauty, or God forbid, reality TV.

If we can learn anything from Kardashian’s experience, it’s that in this time of increased pressure to succumb to societal expectations on women, we need to work hard, show up for each other and embrace our bodies, opinions and beliefs. No matter what our past looks like or who says it’s wrong.
