When it comes to home improvement, one theme that continues to pop up in the comment feeds of HGTV star Drew Scott is kitchen cabinets. You don't have to rip your plain-old cupboards out of the wall in order to reimagine them, and this Property Brother has three DIY tips as proof.

"If you don't like your cabinets, you don't have to replace them," Drew writes on Instagram. "You can just refinish them! It's all in the prep work."

Drew hammers home the importance of preparation with his first tip: sand well.

"Remove any oil or grime, and then re-stain or spray," the HGTV star advises. "I prefer spraying over brushing as it looks more pro."

In addition to finishes, a decorative color can give your cabinets a much-needed makeover.

"For paint, use an oil-based acrylic for a glossy sheen," Drew recommends. "Latex will slough off."

Last, but not least, comes hardware. Your choice here may come down to wether you're tackling a big renovation or a small upgrade.

"It isn't a must, but think about changing out your hardware, too," Drew says. "It might match your new aesthetic better."
