On Monday, Oscar-winning actor Dame Judi Dench became the oldest person ever to feature on the cover of British Vogue at the age of 85.

The British actress was photographed by Nick Knight for the magazine’s June 2020 cover, wearing a vibrant floral Dolce & Gabbana trench coat with fresh, minimal makeup.

The understated, classic beauty look was created by renowned makeup artist and L'Oreal Paris global makeup director Val Garland, who has since outlined the products and techniques she used to capture the iconic cover.

So how did Garland go about creating Dench’s effortlessly luminous look? Believe it or not, without the use of luxury anti-aging formulas or full coverage makeup. Instead, Garland opted for a more affordable approach to highlight the “Shakespeare In Love" star’s “brilliant skin” and natural beauty.

Below, we’ve rounded up together every product that was used, according to an exclusive interview with British Vogue, to create the cover-ready complexion.

Step 1: Massage and serum

“I started by giving Judi a face massage, then used a jade roller to wake up her skin,” Garland tells British Vogue. “I really wanted to make it feel very dewy and fresh so I followed by massaging the L’Oréal Revitalift Filler Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum, which is a skin plumper, into her skin. Massage is a great way of waking up your face and bringing blood to the surface.”

Step 2: Colour correction

Fun fact: Dench didn’t wear any foundation at all for this shoot. Rather than risking the look of lacklustre skin with powder formulas (which can easily fall into the lines of a mature face), Garland decided to go for a combination of Dr Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment, an anti-redness cream, to take down “any redness, where there was any sort of rosacea, on the chin and around the nose” and a peppering of L'Oréal Infallible Full Wear Waterproof Concealer.

“What’s nice about this concealer is that you just spot it where you need it and, because it’s a long-lasting product, it just stays put,” says Garland.

Step 3: A subtle flush of blush

To brighten and warm up the cheeks – not to make them “look pink, but to bring some colour so skin doesn’t look grey” — Garland used Florence By Mills Cheek Me Later Cream Blush. “It’s an absolutely lovely product, from the line by the actress Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things. I used an apricot shade to bring a hint of colour to [Judi’s] lips and cheeks,” says Garland.

Step 4 The right mascara

“She is very allergic to mascara – but she likes mascara – so I was a little bit scared because I didn’t want to be giving any sort of irritation to Dame Judi Dench!” explains Garland.

For a gentle and light touch of mascara, Garland decided to go with La Roche-Posay’s hypoallergenic Toleriane Volume Mascara to cater to Dench’s sensitive eyes.

“I applied it with a small fan brush so that I could get right down to the roots of the lashes, and that worked really well,” Garland said.
