Julia Roberts, Priyanka Chopra, and more celebs celebrated the Met Gala from their homes

The first Monday in May is usually one of the biggest nights in fashion. Whether Rihanna is dressing up as the pope or Lady Gaga is doing a sequence of outfit changes on the red carpet, the Met Gala always gives us something to talk about. This year, however, the event was postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. So we didn’t quite get the spectacle we had all been waiting for, but we did get some social media content that is enough to hold us over until the day we get to see Zendaya own the red carpet once again.

Last night, many celebs found different ways to celebrate in lieu of the big red carpet event: posting throwbacks, dressing up just for fun, or encouraging everyone to stay home at the same time. With these, plus Billy Porter’s Met Gala Challenge on Instagram—which encouraged people to DIY a favorite look from past years—we’re loving how stars are honoring the canceled event.

Below are some of our favorite celebrity Met Gala tributes.

1Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts decided to get all dressed up with nowhere to go. “Here’s me…not going to the Met Ball tonight,” she wrote. She also took the opportunity to remind people, “#yesyoustillhavetostayhome.”

2Priyanka Chopra Jonas

Priyanka Chopra Jonas used the first Monday in May as a reason to play dress-up with her niece Krishna. “This year’s theme: Pretty Pretty Princess,” she wrote. She also gave her niece all the glam and creative direction creds—and we’re pretty confident there’s a bright future ahead for this little one.

3Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling went the sentimental route. She reminisced on the days before she got the invite to the Met Gala when she was just a “fashion nerd” viewing from afar, then she shared how excited she was when she attended for the first time. “I am obsessed with hard work, I love seeing it in other people, and when I saw just how many people it takes to make this effortless, glamorous event take flight, I loved it even more.”

She also gave her followers a homework assignment, calling out Rihanna’s 2009 Met Gala look as a favorite and writing, “look it up, it’s worth it.”

Kaling even gave us a bonus post a few days ago with her own #MetGalaChallenge where she recreated Jared Leto’s look from last year.

some MET’s of the past 🤍

A post shared by Kendall (@kendalljenner) on May 4, 2020 at 9:16am PDT

Kendall Jenner threw it back with photos from the past three Met Gala events. The trip down memory lane included her 2019 orange, feathered, Cher-inspired gown; her all white pantsuit from 2018; and her 2017 barely-there naked dress.

5Blake Lively

Blake Lively threw it back to the moments when it seemed like the Met Gala was designed just for her. She captioned her post, “when the carpet matches the Blakes.” Gigi Hadid commented, asking Lively to share her secrets, “How far in advance do you have to tell Anna what color to make the carpet?”

6Billy Porter

Billy Porter posed a question in his Met Gala throwback post: “Can you believe @voguemagazine called this the most fabulous entrance in @themetgalaofficial history?” Yes, Billy, we absolutely can.

7Brandon Maxwell

Designer Brandon Maxwell shared a clip from just moments before Lady Gaga made her iconic, camp-embodied Met Gala entrance. His caption emphasized what a big deal the night is for designers, too. “My fiancé filmed this, and I’ll never ever forget looking up at him as we approached the carpet and seeing a tear fall down his face from pride. It remains one of my most treasured memories,” he wrote.

8Naomi Campbell

Naomi Campbell, a decades-spanning champion of the Met Gala, shared a throwback photo of her pink, feathered look from last year’s ball.

9Jessica Biel

Jessica Biel kept it real. “I’ll be sitting on the couch in a onesie, NOT in spanx and a gown,” she wrote. But she still took us all with her on this throwback journey.

10Hailey Bieber

Remember when Hailey Bieber made a whale tail look red-carpet glam? She shared pics of last year’s pink Alexander Wang look and wrote, “can’t wait till we can do it all again and again and again.”

11Jennifer Lopez

J.Lo took us all the way back. In this video montage, she shared snaps from past Met Galas, from her very first 2004 appearance to last year’s head-to-toe crystal look.
