Bryce Dallas Howard, DeWanda Wise want more for this 'formidable' woman in Jurassic franchise future

Jurassic World Dominion stars Bryce Dallas Howard and DeWanda Wise celebrate the franchise's "formidable" women who are scientific experts, not just "cute," and have now revealed what they want to see in any future versions of the story, now that the extended version of the latest Jurassic film has been released on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, and Blu-ray.

“I watched the original Jurassic Park in theatres opening weekend when I was 12 years old and absolutely, the character of Dr. Ellie Sattler totally stood out to me because also, it was ‘93 and you weren't really used to seeing women having such agency, being so formidable and being involved because they're an expert in something, not because they're just cute,” Howard explained to Yahoo Canada.

“She was wearing high waisted khakis, just incredible, and I think one of the things that is so important to give credit to, is Michael Crichton created that character, he created the character of Sarah Harding, Colin Trevorrow created my character,...because of the men involved in this franchise, we now outnumber them because that was the goal. It's a great job to be a woman on this set of a Jurassic movie.”

“It's in the DNA, it really is,” Wise added.

'I'm very conscious about what everybody wants'

Jurassic World saga director/writer/executive producer, Colin Trevorrow, indicated that including iconic Jurassic Park stars in Jurassic World Dominion was an important way to really connect the stories.

Speaking about the characters in particular, Trevorrow stressed that each character is there to speak to and connect with a different member of the audience.

“What's really interesting about this franchise is that what people want is different, based on which franchise you were introduced to, and you're a part of, it's generational in a lot of ways,” he said. “So I think that Jurassic Park fans...who grew up on those movies, were really invested in Ellie and Alan and Ian Malcolm coming back into the story, younger fans are really invested in Owen and Claire, and younger girls, especially, really invested in Maisie and her story.”

“At times, it gets very challenging because I understand how some 40 year old guy may not think that the Maisie story is for him, but it isn't necessarily for him, it's for his daughter, and I would hope that as people watch these movies, they recognize that I'm very conscious about what everybody wants out of them. I'm trying to give everyone just enough so that it can be for everyone and not push any one group out.”

'These are not monster movies, these are science thrillers'

With the release of the Jurassic World Dominion extended edition Digital, 4K Ultra HD, and Blu-ray, there is plenty more to see in this Jurassic universe, including heartwarming behind-the-scenes moments and more of DeWanda Wise's character, Kayla Watts, in the insanely detailed dino market, but a highlight is certainly the alternate opening sequence that was controversially cut from the feature film's release, but still incredibly important for Colin Trevorrow.

“To me, it puts, honestly, the whole franchise in context, to really understand what 65 million years means and the idea that we're able to see these creatures in their natural habitat, their environment, to assure everyone in the audience that they were real, these are not monster movies, these are science thrillers,” Trevorrow said. “Then to hard cut to present day, five million years later, and see the T-Rex navigating the real world, to me, after we see the mosquito bite it and travel into the sun, it encapsulates the concept in the opening sequence, and I found it absolutely crucial for the movie.”

Could there be more for Kayla Watts?

Looking at the future of the Jurassic franchise, one thing its stars want to see is DeWanda Wise's character Kayla Watts "getting more screen time."

"I think everyone agrees on that," Bryce Dallas Howard stressed.

“There's just a lot to explore, when you think about what it means for dinosaurs to live everywhere, everywhere is a lot of places," Wise said. "I cannot stop thinking about that moment when someone for the first time, like a civilian for the first time, was just like, 'oh I'm sorry, what is that?' It plays in my dream, so I just think that would be so cool."

For Colin Trevorrow, if someone takes on another Jurassic chapter from his extensive legacy, he hopes they "remember to keep it soulful and to keep it meaningful."

“I almost don't want to influence their instincts," Trevorrow said. "I actually want to be surprised because I feel like I surprised Steven with where I wanted to take it, and it's exciting for me to not, even if I'm involved, which I may be, to be someone who's helping and giving someone the resources, and the means to realize their creative vision.”
