Kaia Gerber Wore This Controversial Fall Staple in Place of a Shirt

Backgrid Kaia Gerber

While the East Coast is strolling predictably into October's crunchy leaves and pumpkin patch photo opps, West Coasters are still chained to their air conditioning. But, despite life in the high 70ºs, California and its surrounding areas still have fall on the mind — what's a girl to do?

Los Angeleno Kaia Gerber split the difference in a way only a supermodel could devise. On a walk with her dog through the celeb-riddled city, Gerber wore a cable knit sweater vest — the most iconic fall layering staple we can think of — not layered under or over anything at all. The gray V-neck knit flew sans shirt, which allowed the model to participate in the autumnal tradition of cozy dressing without the oppressiveness of sleeves.

The once-sidelined article has made a huge resurgence over the past year and being as widely celebrated this season as such a controversial piece could be. While we admit even some East Coasters are kind of exaggerating on the seasonal outerwear front, this comeback turns out to be great for all American climates. For season-hungry Californians stuck with year round pool weather to New Yorkers whose closet space means every piece needs to work overtime, the return of the sweater vest is a win-win.
