Kate Middleton Reveals She Has a Jam Recipe of Her Own, Promising to Send It to Kids “So You Can Try It”
While sister-in-law Meghan Markle has an affinity for strawberry and raspberry jam, Kate’s flavor of choice is apparently plum.
On a visit to Wales yesterday, Kate Middleton spoke about her love for the outdoors at a community garden—and made a surprising promise to young gardeners.
Alongside husband Prince William, the Princess of Wales made a second stop during their busy day February 26 at the Meadow Street Community Garden and Woodland. Earlier in the day, Kate wore a favorite red double-breasted Alexander McQueen coat atop a chocolate brown turtleneck, paired with a tartan skirt and long suede boots. For her visit to the community garden, Kate changed clothes to a checked wool midi skirt by Gucci and a cropped tweed Ralph Lauren jacket—which she first wore as far back as 2007!
The Prince and Princess of Wales were visiting Wales ahead of the Welsh national holiday St. David’s Day, which is on March 1. (Both William and Kate wore daffodils affixed to their collars, which is the national flower of Wales.) While visiting the garden, Kate heard how young volunteers were growing their own plums and making them into jam, Hello! reported. She then revealed that, like sister-in-law Meghan Markle, she has a jam recipe of her own: “I’ll send you my recipe so you can try it,” Kate said of her plum jam.
When Meghan first announced the creation of her lifestyle brand, formerly called American Riviera Orchard and now renamed As Ever, the company’s strawberry jam was the hot commodity last spring. Fifty jars were sent out to friends of Meghan and celebrities, including Chrissy Teigen, Kris Jenner, and Mindy Kaling; after renaming the company As Ever earlier this month, Meghan teased in a mood board that one of As Ever’s first product offerings would be raspberry jam, as labels for the product were visible on the mood board posted to Instagram on February 20.
In Wales, Kate also shared at the garden that she is learning to forage in Norfolk, where she and William’s country home, Anmer Hall, is located. Kate mentioned that her three kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis were impressed by a “huge” puffball mushroom she found near their home: “The children thought it was fascinating,” the future queen said.
Earlier in the day, William and Kate took a train to Pontypridd (which was delayed almost an hour “due to train disruptions,” according to Hello!), and surprised fellow passengers upon their arrival at the Cardiff train station. They then ventured to Pontypridd Market, where they took on the task of making traditional Welsh cakes. The couple engaged “in a bit of friendly competition” making the cakes, with Kate playfully chiding her husband at one point: “Those are so good,” she said. “How did you do that?”
“Well, I don’t know, my stunning baker skills,” William cheekily retorted. Referring to their 2019 appearance on baking legend Mary Berry’s A Berry Royal Christmas Show, he added, “Mary Berry taught me everything I need to know.”
Theresa Conner, owner of The Welsh Cake Shop—where William and Kate showed off their skills yesterday—said, per Hello!, “They were very good. I asked and they said they had never made Welsh cakes before. They were surprisingly very good, and both good bakers. I gave them a quick demonstration, and they took to it like ducks to water.”
“I should have taken the opportunity to get them in for St. David’s Day,” she added. “I can do with all the help I can get.”
William then distributed the Welsh cakes he and Kate made to children, saying as he did so, “Welsh cakes made by us.”
Later, at the community garden, The Mirror reported that William and Kate laughed as they were shown “Bug-inham Palace” (a play, of course, off of Buckingham Palace), an insect conservation area. A huge fan of the outdoors—as evidenced in her photos and videos released during her cancer journey, which mostly showed the Princess of Wales in nature—Kate and William seemed to relish their time in the community garden, with William asking at one point, “Do you like getting outdoors?” before adding, “It’s so good, isn’t it?”
The two then joined a group around a fire to make balms out of plants. “We both love the smell of a fire,” William said, as Kate put her hand on his back (per The Mirror). Poignantly, Kate then added as thick black smoke wafted over them, “Until you’re in it.”
Referring perhaps to their delayed start to the day thanks to the train they arrived on, William said as they were departing the community garden, “I’m sorry, we’ve got to catch a train.” Looking at their security team, he said, “They’re getting a bit panicky!”
Wednesday’s engagements marked the couple’s return to work after a Caribbean getaway during George, Charlotte, and Louis’ half-term break from school, which ended when the kids went back to the classroom on February 24.
