Kate Middleton's necklace is a secret tribute to Princess Diana

The Royal Family are well known for their Crown jewels and baubles. But perhaps the most famous of all sits on the Duchess of Cambridge’s left hand — Princess Diana’s engagement ring.

The show stopping 18-carat oval sapphire ring encircled by 14 sparkling diamonds was given to the Duchess when Prince William proposed to her back in 2010. But it’s not the only piece of jewelry that Kate remembers the late princess by.

In 2013, Kate’s younger sister, Pippa Middleton, gave her an engraved necklace to celebrate the birth of Prince George. The necklace featured a gold charm in the shape of a little boy and a disc engraved with the little prince’s full name, George Alexander Lewis. Also on the necklace was a dainty gold charm in the shape of a heart emblazoned with a “W,” in honour of Prince William.

The gift was made by London-based boutique Merci Maman and was a nod to a gold pendant necklace that Princess Diana used to wear.

“Upon the birth of Prince William in 1982, Prince Charles gave Diana the gift of a gold pendant engraved their new son’s name, which she always wore close to her heart,” Merci Maman wrote in a blog post. “In 2013, Pippa Middleton continued this family tradition by giving her sister Kate, The Duchess of Cambridge, our Personalized Duchess Necklace to celebrate the birth of Prince George.”

If you’re looking to steal a little piece of Kate or Diana’s style, you can get a personalized pendant of your own for $130 on Merci Maman’s site. Or you can get a replica of The Duchess’s necklace for $213, with the names of your own children or loved ones.
