Katie Holmes had a “friend you see all the time” moment the other day: when they walk in the door with a brand-new haircut they are super excited about, but their friends don’t notice. The worst. Well, the actress attended the Chanel Artists Dinner during the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival Monday with freshly cut locks, and even we almost missed it. Granted, she only cut a few inches, but any haircut is a big one, especially when it creates an entirely different style.

Holmes chopped off her long brown locks and debuted a lob at the event. Her ’do blew in the wind, barely hitting her collarbone. It was styled in loose waves, giving it that effortless look everyone loves. The cut is courtesy of DJ Quintero, who shared the style on Instagram, with the caption, “Chop Chop ✂️ New haircut for Miss @katieholmes212.”

She debuted the ’do with a breezy ensemble that perfectly matched her beachy waves. The Kennedys: After Camelot star rocked a short-sleeved navy blue cardigan with lace white pants that were just the right amount of see-through, save for white shorts that served as a slip. Her makeup was appropriately minimal, au naturel style.

If you want more Holmes hair excitement, you’re in luck. It seems this shorter look might be even shorter-lived. A few short hours after posting pics of her new hair, she posted another photo of herself sitting in a salon chair. Maybe the lob was just the first step to a much shorter style. She did tag hairstylist Serge Normant, however, so maybe she was just getting some expert-level help styling her new lob.

In recent years we’ve seen Holmes go from lob to bob to long locks with bangs and back. And we’re not surprised she’s come back to the style, as it looks great on her.
