We’ve come a long way since nylon stockings first went on sale on Oct. 24, 1939, as Katie Holmes proved when she stepped out Tuesday night in New York City.

The actress was seen making a case for an unexpected fashion accessory as she stopped by the opening party celebrating Nordstrom’s NYC Flagship, followed by an art gala appearance.

Pairing her slinky $3,625 Saint Laurent minidress with black pointed-toe pumps, the real standout of Katie’s night-out look was her $42 patterned tights.

Holmes was spotted in the Polka Dottie Tights by ITEM m6, which are available at Nordstrom. The dainty pattern added a whimsical touch to her otherwise classic outfit, and proved yet again that Katie’s style is one to watch.

With a sheer design and all-over polka-dot pattern, these tights are a step up from your basic black nylons. They also provide light compression for a slimming look and an even, airbrushed-looking finish to legs.

If you’re looking to pick up a pair for yourselves, you’ll want to get them before they’re gone, since only a few sizes still remain in stock. Ahead, we’ve also rounded up the best patterned tights inspired by our style crush of the moment, Katie Holmes.
