Katie Holmes Swapped Out Her $4,000 Coat for This Simpler Fall Alternative

The only thing crisper than the fall air is the stack of crisp $100 bills needed to buy a $4,000 Max Mara coat. The famous teddy coat is a favorite among celebrities like Blake Lively and Katie Holmes, and it starts making cozy and chic appearances left and right come this time of year. It is basically a pile of warm fluff you can live in, which makes sense considering it costs months’ worth of rent (which is also quite rude, to say the least).
Holmes, though, has decided to kick off the fall season by not reminding us of the fact that we don’t have an extra $4k lying around. Instead, she announced the arrival of sweater weather with a more relatable double-breasted checkered coat, which often goes for less than $300 at Nordstrom and even under $60 on Amazon.
She paired the perfect-for-fall coat with green Le Monde Beryl mules she’s been wearing for weeks, a brown leather bucket bag, her go-to pair of oversized Westward Leaning sunglasses, a classic pair of faded jeans, and a Baublebar face mask. The coat was clearly the star of the outfit, but unlike The Max Mara Coat, it doesn’t draw too much attention to itself. It’s more subtle and less intimidating — a relatable look we can all wear and afford.
While it may not be the most famous of fall coats yet, the checkered style is definitely an under-the-radar up-and-comer that will be everywhere soon. And buying one means you can keep your pile of crisp $100 bills to pay rent instead of purchase fluff.
