KC Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker will miss second straight game with left-ankle sprain

The Chiefs won’t have their starting kicker for a second straight week.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid on Friday ruled out Harrison Butker (left-ankle sprain) for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

“He’s making progress,” Reid said. “He’s working on his (leg) swings now.”

Butker wasn’t observed on the practice field Friday, and he hasn’t practiced since suffering the injury in the Chiefs’ season-opening win against the Arizona Cardinals. He briefly left the Week 1 game before returning to drill a 54-yard field goal; safety Justin Reid handled kickoffs.

But Butker did not play at all last weekend against the L.A. Chargers; the Chiefs instead started Matt Ammendola, a veteran kicker they’d signed to their practice squad.

Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub on Thursday emphasized the need for Butker to fully heal.

“The swelling was really bad in his ankle,” Toub said. “It went all the way up, and the blood went all the way down to his toes. It was pretty ugly. They’re getting the swelling out his foot and he just needs time to get that thing healed up.”

If all continues to go well in the recovery process, Butker could return in Week 4.

“Hopefully, he’s ready to go next week,” Reid said.

Ammendola converted two field goals and three extra points in Kansas City’s 27-24 home-opening win against the Chargers. Ammendola, who reverted to the Chiefs’ practice squad after last week’s game, has handled the kicking duties in practice this week and is on standby for what projects as another call-up for Sunday’s game.

In other injury-related news, Reid said defensive end Mike Danna (calf) is likewise out for Sunday’s game. With Danna not playing, Reid indicated that Malik Herring, who was inactive the first two games, is the next player up to provide depth on the edges behind Frank Clark, rookie George Karlaftis and Carlos Dunlap.

“We’ll have (No.) 94 (Herring) jump in there and get a couple of reps, too, potentially,” Reid said.

Butker and Danna are the only two Chiefs players carrying a game designation, meaning everybody else on Kansas City’s active 53-player roster is available for action against the Colts.

For the Colts, three-time All-Pro linebacker Shaquille Leonard (back) and tackle Bernhard Raimann (ankle) have been ruled out for Sunday’s game. Defensive end Yannick Ngakoue (back) is designated as questionable, according to the Colts’ official website.
