What You Should Know About That Australian Brand Everyone on Instagram is Wearing

We asked sibling duo Camilla and Marc about their 15 year old brand that's found success all around the world.

It’s no secret that we here at InStyle love all things Australia. So when we learned it was Aussie brand Camilla and Marc’s 15-year anniversary, we knew we had to do something special. Our very own editor-in-chief Laura Brown was there IRL to witness their show during Australian Fashion Week and we saw via her Instagram the brand’s signature tailoring and brilliantly overly sized handbags.

So let’s dig deeper into the history of sibling-run brand founded in 2003 by Camilla Freeman-Topper and Marc Freeman. Here, they answer our pressing (and, quite honestly, fashionable) questions about their beloved brand.

What was the first piece of clothing you ever made?

A silk taffeta black pencil skirt with a pretty great blue top-stitch that I somehow figured out how to apply on a domestic sewing machine at my families kitchen table.

When was the first moment you felt you had really “made it”?

It’s so difficult to define a moment like that. There have been many occasions along the way that have been super exciting, but not one where Marc or myself felt like we had made it. In our eyes if you make it there is nothing left to grow.

Who is one woman who hasn’t worn your brand that you would be so excited to see wearing it?

It doesn’t matter who she is, we just love seeing the way she styles it! Women like Tilda Swinton, Adwoa Aboah, Lauren Hutton are all women I feel epitomize the brand so it would be wonderful to see them in CAMILLA AND MARC.

You just put on a major fashion show. What’s the most difficult part of that process?

There is a huge amount of effort put into every production. The hardest part would have to be the long days and sleepless nights.

What do you constantly go back to for inspiration?

My grandmother. She had an innate sense of style, and an elegance that has inspired me from a very young age. She lives on through the timeless details of the CAMILLA AND MARC brand, and she often forms part of my inspiration process.

If you were not a designer, what would you be?

A chef! I love to cook. It’s a form of meditation for me and a way for me to disconnect and do something for myself and my family.

What is utterly Australian about your brand?

The effortlessness in the design, the languid shapes and relaxed silhouettes which CAMILLA AND MARC have become famous for.

What song best exemplifies your brand?

London based sound engineer, Dan Lywood created a really epic track for our Resort show. The playlist was a journey of blissful orchestral sounds underpinned by a current of galactic, extra-terrestrial beats. He did an incredible job.

If you had to write a book about CAMILLA AND MARC, what would the title be?

Alas, The Journey is Just Beginning

How do you hope a woman feels when she’s wearing CAMILLA AND MARC?

Powerful, effortless, and sensual.

If you were told you had five seconds to pack up one of those huge CAMILLA AND MARC bags because you were moving to a deserted island, what would you pack?

My three beautiful children, my incredible husband and certainly 50+ sunscreen.

What will CAMILLA and MARC be in 15 years?

I wouldn’t want to define in one sentence. But what I will say is this. The journey has just begun. Come along for the ride. It’s going to be pretty magical.
