Kristen Stewart was told to stop holding 'girlfriend's hand in public' if she wanted a Marvel movie

Kristen Stewart is gearing up for the November release of Charlie's Angles, her most mainstream role in years, but did she almost show off her fighting skills first in the Marvel Universe? During an interview with Harpers Bazaar U.K., Stewart recalled being told to tone down PDA with her girlfriend if she was interested in a Marvel role. Stewart — whose famous exes include Robert Pattinson, Victoria's Secret model Stella Maxwell and singer St. Vincent — also explained how that "old school mentality" prevented her from publicly discussing her sexuality for years.

"I think I just wanted to enjoy my life. And that took precedence over protecting my life, because in protecting it, I was ruining it," she shared. "Like what, you can’t go outside with who you’re with? You can’t talk about it in an interview? I was informed by an old school mentality, which is — you want to preserve your career and your success and your productivity, and there are people in the world who don’t like you, and they don’t like that you date girls, and they don’t like that you don’t identify as a quote unquote 'lesbian,' but you also don’t identify as a quote unquote 'heterosexual.' And people like to know stuff, so what the f*** are you?"

She continued, "I have fully been told, 'If you just like do yourself a favor, and don’t go out holding your girlfriend’s hand in public, you might get a Marvel movie.'" The writer noted how the actress looked "almost amused at the memory." Although Stewart kept it vague about where that directive came from, she added, "I don’t want to work with people like that." (Marvel did not immediately respond to Yahoo Entertainment’s request for comment.)

"Literally, life is a huge popularity contest," she added.

The 29-year-old credited a younger generation with helping give her the confidence to step out publicly with a romantic partner. "I just think we’re all kind of getting to a place where — I don’t know, evolution’s a weird thing — we’re all becoming incredibly ambiguous," she explained. "And it’s this really gorgeous thing."

Stewart doesn't identify as lesbian or bisexual and isn't a fan of labels. Although she has dated women in recent years, one of her most high-profile relationships was with her Twilight co-star, Robert Pattinson. They were notoriously guarded when it came to their romance.

"When me and Rob were together, we did not have an example to go by," she recalled. "So much was taken from us that, in trying to control one aspect, we were just like, 'No, we will never talk about it. Never. Because it’s ours.'"

These days, Stewart isn't afraid to step out holding hands with someone. After reportedly splitting (again) with Stella Maxwell, the actress is rumored to be seeing Dylan Meyer. She was recently photographed kissing the screenwriter in New York.
