Yoko Ono stood on the second-tier spiral of the Guggenheim Museum in New York peering down at the crowd within which perched a larger-than-life bottle of perfume. No ordinary bottle though: This one was modeled on Lady Gaga’s new toilette, Fame. A giant gold claw-like cap clamped down on the one-storey-sized, midnight-hued flask. But instead of liquid, inside that room-within-a-bottle reclined a sleeping Lady Gaga.
[Photo credit: Wire Images] And I watched: witness to the art-imitates-life/life-imitates-art moment; a surreal universe that is the reality of one of today’s biggest stars. It was a wild party to mark the performer’s perfume debut. And it seemed the ideal way to celebrate the weirdly wonderful world of this latest celebrity fragrance. Marc Jacobs kissed and snuggled with his date amidst a crowd that included shutterbug Ellen von Unwerth, designers Jason Wu and Olivier Theyskens, model Jessica Stam, socialite-entrepreneur Paris Hilton and countless bare-chested young men. Guests, packed like sardines in the museum’s first-floor space, were all clad in black-tie garb with requisite masquerade masks, sipping cocktails out of black caldron-like glass goblets, which bubbled forth with trailing smoke.
[Photo credit: Wire Images] The dramatic drink, a sweet but tart cocktail garnished with a chunk of honeycomb as a spear, in black glass, nodded to the predominant notes of the new perfume. Minus the vodka in the toilette of course. And finally, when Gaga awoke from her slumber after much prodding from the audience—a small opening in the wall of the perfume-room allowed an endless line of the more daring guests to reach in and stroke the star’s hand in efforts to wake her—she primped in front of her mirror and sprayed on a hit of perfume. Then she crouched (rumour has it that she then peed into a champagne bucket).

After a quick walkabout, she promptly returned to the confines of the perfume pod to complete the performance-art aspect of the event. Disrobing to a corset and thong, Gaga was tattooed on the back of her head by artist Mark Mahoney (the star had shaved the lower half of her head earlier this week to honour the death of her close photographer-friend Terry Richardson’s mother). During the entire time, a mammoth screen high in the Guggenheim rotunda broadcasted the goings-on. And the crowd watched.
