Is Lady Gaga's White Cape a Tribute to Princess Leia?

The all-white ensemble and braid look great no matter what galaxy you're in.

Tomorrow, Lady Gaga is set to perform at President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration in Washington, D.C. Today, she gave fans a galactic moment before the big day, sharing an intimate snapshot from the U.S. Capitol Building wearing a white cape and braid that recalled another intergalactic icon: Star Wars' Princess Leia.

Gaga's Instagram post showed her under Constantino Brumidi's "The Apotheosis of Washington," the fresco under the Capitol Dome. In addition to her braid and white cape, she wore a white jacket and matching face mask.

"I pray tomorrow will be a day of peace for all Americans. A day for love, not hatred. A day for acceptance, not fear. A day for dreaming of our future joy as a country. A dream that is non-violent, a dream that provides safety for our souls," she wrote alongside the photo. "Love, from the Capitol."

Her white ensemble looked like Leia's iconic all-white gown, which wasn't a cape but did feature plenty of volume and drama. As a leader of the Rebel Alliance, Leia fought tyranny, so whether or not Gaga's outfit paid tribute to the princess, the coincidence — and occasion — made for a moment that both Little Monsters and Star Wars die-hards can rally behind.

The white outfit could also be a tribute to the all-white suits that many female representatives wore to bring attention to the suffrage movement. Kamala Harris wore an all-white suit when she became the first woman ever to be elected vice president of the United States. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as well as many other representatives, wore a white cape to 2019's State of the Union address.

Leading up to the election, Gaga helped stump for Biden, making appearances before Election Day beside the now-president-elect. During one stop, she wore sky-high boots and a bejeweled face mask and before that, she recycled some of her most iconic looks to urge voters to get out to the polls.
