League of Legends (LoL) developer Riot Games has confirmed that Arcane, the LoL Netflix animated series is still going “full steam ahead” despite Netflix recently making cuts to its animated titles.

Riot first confirmed with Dexerto that Arcane is safe from Netflix animation cuts due to the nature of their deal with the streaming platform.

The streaming giant has reportedly lost 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of this year amid growing competition. This resulted in an estimated total loss of US$54 billion in profits for Netflix.

Such losses reportedly came as result of the platform's decision to pull out from Russia in response to the country's invasion of Ukraine, as well as its decision to change subscriber plans, which included a cheaper, ad-supported subscription tier.

In response to its sudden downturn, Netflix decided to cut its animation department. According to The Wrap, Netflix's Director of Creative Leadership and Development for Original Animation Phil Rynda, along with others members of their team, were let go this week.

In addition, several high-profile Netflix animated series have been cancelled, including the long-awaited adaptation of Bone, the critically-acclaimed comic from Jeff Smith.

But unlike most of Netflix's animated titles, Riot has complete control over Arcane's production and has been collaborating with French company Fortiche on the show's second season, which is currently in the works.

The LoL developer’s deal with Netflix is only related to distribution, so a cut in Netflix’s animation department won’t affect Arcane in any way.

Riot made a direct investment in Arcane's development company, Fortiche, earlier this year, with hopes to collaborate with the animation team "for decades to come".

This will involve further Arcane seasons, as well as offshoot shows, possibly animated movies, and a slew of other things.

Arcane has been a massive hit since its release, consistently topping Netflix charts in its debut month last November. The series also won nine Annie Awards this year.

Arcane follows the story of the sisters Jinx and Vi, along with other LoL champions Caitlyn, Jayce, Viktor, Ekko, and Heimerdinger. Serving as the backdrop for all these characters and their stories are the twin cities of Piltover and Zaun, once united but now locked in conflict.

Arcane Season 2 will further explore this conflict and may feature more champions from the LoL universe.
