1 dead, at least 3 others seriously injured in Toronto shooting

A 28-year-old man is dead and at least three others are seriously injured after about 100 shots were fired in Toronto's Etobicoke neighbourhood on Sunday.

Police said they were called to an apartment complex in the Willowridge Road and Eglinton Avenue West area shortly before 2:30 p.m. ET.

Speaking to CBC News from the scene, Duty Insp. Michael Williams said a dark coloured sedan entered a roundabout outside an apartment building located at 22 Willowridge Road and approached two parked cars— a Mercedes Benz and a Toyota Camry.

An undetermined number of shooters from that sedan then opened fire on the occupants of the parked cars.

When officers arrived, Williams said they found one victim in the roundabout near the Mercedes. Two others had collapsed down the street near Richgrove Drive.

A total of four men in their late 20s and early 30s were found suffering from "very serious" gunshot wounds. Police had initially said there were five victims.

A 28-year-old man was transported to hospital and later died of his injuries.

The homicide unit has been called to investigate.

Police say three men are in hospital, including one in life-threatening condition. The two others are in serious, non-life threatening condition.

"It's a sunny day and as much as we're on lockdown, I'm sure there were multiple people and likely children in the area enjoying the sunshine and then it's interrupted by something ridiculous like this," Williams said.

"Any time there's gun fire in the city it's very concerning to us and it's not anything anybody likes to see. It's a traumatic experience for anybody that lives around here."

'I run for my life,' says nearby resident

Sunday's shooting left multiple bullet holes in nearby buildings.

"I got shocked," said Irene Nanamotu, who lives in the area. She said the afternoon gun violence is a threat to the neighbourhood and concerning for families.

"I'm afraid. It's in the neighbourhood and we're parents. We have kids; our own lives," she said.

Donna Brown, another resident who lives nearby, said she heard multiple rounds of gunfire on Sunday afternoon.

"I was just coming to go get my laundry and I heard gunshots so I run, I run for my life," she said.

"It's really scary because you know, we live around the area, we have kids ... And in broad daylight!" Brown said, referring to the noon shooting.

Renee Blair was disheartened by the violence in her neighbourhood, which she said is normally quite peaceful. She said she has a young son and considered herself lucky he wasn't outside when the shooting occurred.

Likely multiple firearms involved, police say

Based on the number of shots fired, Williams said it's safe to assume there were likely multiple firearms involved in the shooting. Whether there was an exchange of fire will be part of the investigation, he said.

According to reports, two suspected shooters fled the scene in a dark sedan, although police say it's still unclear how many assailants they are searching for.

No descriptions of the assailants have been released as of Sunday night.

Investigators are appealing for anyone with dashcam footage or who may have witnessed what happened to come forward.
