Lions claw at Patriots, NFL elite in Week 3 Super Bowl odds

Christina Gregg@Oath Com,

As Week 3 NFL play kicks off tonight with a matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers, one NFC team looks poised to chase the NFL elite after getting a bump in their Super Bowl futures.

According to Bovada, Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions have doubled their chances of taking Super Bowl 52 as their own after they beat the New York Giants 24-10 in East Rutherford this past Monday. A play of note was Detroit punt returner Jamal Agnew's 88-yard return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Shawn Windsor of the Detroit Free Press describes Detroit's momentum in their Week 2 Giants matchup, saying games like that are the kind that "catapult a team toward the postseason."

Still, despite the Lions victory on the road, Detroit remains behind 10 other teams whose chances remain greater when it comes to the Vince Lombardi trophy. Tom Brady and the dominant New England Patriots hold steady with the greatest odds of claiming the repeat Super Bowl win after they defeated the Saints 36-20 in New Orleans.

It's no mystery to dedicated NFL plans that the league feels a bit lopsided right now, with a select number of powerful teams poised to steadily own their week-to-week schedule while the Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns of the league are left to suffer in football purgatory without a QB to call their own.

True to this narrative, the Steelers and Seahawks trail the Patriots with the second and third best chances at the Super Bowl. Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers saw a significant dip, though, when their odds dropped from 15/2 to 10/1 this week after their loss 34-23 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

The New York Jets remain in last place, with 5000/1 odds of winning this season's Super Bowl.
