Would you live in a Poundland flat?
For the first time, Poundland is stepping into the property market with two flats for sale above its newly restored shop on Elgin High Street in Scotland.
The apartments, located in a historic heritage building, are the result of an ambitious six-year refurbishment project. The listing is now live on Rightmove, with prices starting at £85,000.
The listed building, which dates back to 1856, originally housed the first Royal Bank of Scotland branch in Elgin before becoming a temperance hotel, then Woolworths, and later, Poundland. After acquiring the building outright in 2019, the discount retailer undertook an extensive restoration, carefully dismantling and then reconstructing to preserve its historic exterior.
‘Bringing the building back to life and restoring it to its former glory has been no easy task,’ says Poundland’s transformation director, Alan Smallman, who led the project. ‘We know how much this building means to the people of Elgin and Moray. We hope the love we’ve shown it will be a catalyst for more investment into Elgin and its high street.'
The one-bedroom apartments are above the only Poundland store in the UK that the retailer owns outright. For those looking to combine affordable living with a slice of history, these flats offer a unique opportunity to become part of Elgin’s vibrant high street community. One of the apartments has been fully styled using Poundland’s own budget homeware collection, Pepco Homewares, which features items priced at £1 or less.
Stylist Emma Morton-Holmes transformed the apartment using pieces from Poundland’s growing range of homeware. ‘This project highlights how stylish and functional interiors can be achieved affordably,’ says Emma. Her creativity extended to crafting a pouffe from three Poundland rugs, showing how versatile the brand’s products can be.
The local community praised the restoration project, with Gerry McAloon, the store’s manager, describing it as a homecoming. ‘I simply cannot wait to be back open in our home on Elgin’s High Street once more,’ says Gerry, who has worked in the building for over 30 years, dating back to its Woolworths days.
Cllr Marc Macrae, chair of Moray Council’s economic development and infrastructure services committee, echoed this, saying, ‘I add my congratulations to the Poundland team’s efforts in refurbishing an iconic Moray building and giving the centre of Elgin a much-welcome boost. It’s especially heartening to see the store about to start trading again, and I’m sure there will be plenty of interest in the flats.’
The apartments start at £85,000 — a little more than Poundland’s iconic £1 price tag!
‘We’ve poured so much care and effort into this project,' adds Alan. 'We hope it inspires more investment and shows what’s possible when we blend history with modern living.'
