A US photographer has released a book celebrating older couples from around the world – to prove love and romance is not constrained to young people.

Ari Seth Cohen, a photographer and author who lives in both New York City and Los Angeles, is also the founder of fashion blog Advanced Style.

His latest title, ‘Advanced Love’, published on 24 December 2018, celebrates 40 different older couples around the world.

Ahead of Valentine’s Day this Thursday (14 February), the book honours love in all its forms, including both same sex and heterosexual couples.

Cohen’s fashion photography background is also clear through his selections, including the stylish Lana & Eugene and the matching Ellen & Dick.

His book includes the incredible stories of couples like Tessa and Erika, who were married before Tessa’s gender transition, when she was known as Richard, 33 years ago.

They separated four years into their marriage, when Richard confessed his need to transition to become a woman, and went their separate ways. They later reunited, as Erika and Tessa, after a fifteen year separation.

In the foreword, Cohen explains what he has learnt about love through creating the book.

“I learned that there is no one secret to long-lasting love other than a constant commitment to practicing patience, kindness, respect, empathy, humor [sic], forgiveness, and a dialogue of openness and communication.

“It comes easier to some than others, though never perfectly and rarely without a few bumps in the road.”

Later on, he adds: “To love, and to age, is a privilege, and the ability to love and find love is bound by the constraints of neither age nor time.”
