There are lots of tips and tricks that can help you save money at the grocery store. Coupons, sales, emails, and other strategies are easy to take advantage of. Rewards programs, too, are great for making sure you're getting the best deal. But there is one store that is gaining popularity because of its already low prices, and they keep adding locations to their lineup because of it.
This summer alone, Lidl announced its 100th store in Suwanee, Georgia, and five new stores on Long Island in New York. But that's not all — they recently revealed they are planning to open 50 more by the end of 2021. And it will cost them about $500 million.
The low-cost grocer is already located in Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. These nine states will also host the new locations that will create about 2,000 jobs.
The company employs about 287,000 people in 32 countries. But the recent U.S. Lidl expansion news comes with the report of a few shut-downs, too.
"As part of Lidl's ongoing effort to prioritize the most convenient locations, Lidl also will close two stores in Havelock and Shelby, North Carolina," they announced. "All employees there will be given the opportunity to relocate to another store within Lidl's growing store network."
Another Lidl expansion is hardly a surprise. The Germany-based chain has been popping up along the east coast for a few years now. Prices can be up to 45% below competitors, according to a study done by the University of North Carolina. Plus, the company is August's top retailer in the National Retail Federation's Hot 100 Retailers list. In 2019, just two years after arriving in the U.S., Lidl was named the third-best supermarket in the country by Food&Wine. It's also the ninth-cheapest grocery store in the country, as well.
