Madonna kicks off VMAs in a butt-baring outfit and Twitter is freaking out

The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards took place Sunday and Madonna, the woman who opened the very first VMAs in 1984 with a performance of “Like a Virgin,” was back to kick things off again. But it wasn’t her arrival that had people talking, it was her departure.

After a pre-produced video introduction with Madonna riding in the back of a New York City taxi and describing her move there as a 19-year-old, the MTV icon took the stage to a long ovation before removing a trench coat to reveal a black leather dominatrix outfit.

“And they said we wouldn’t last. But we’re still here, motherf***ers!” Madonna said. “Welcome to the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards.”

That’s when she turned and walked away, revealing much of her butt cheeks. And while the 63-year-old is no stranger to creating buzz at the VMAs, like her 2003 on-stage kisses with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, this time was no different as viewers quickly took to Twitter with their reactions.

And this time was no different as viewers quickly took to Twitter with comments like Madonna opened the VMAs, talked for one minute, and then made sure to leave the stage by showing us her butt cheeks. She made sure to give top moment at the show in the first minute, OMG. And also, simply, Madonna's butt. That is all.

And while Twitter was celebrating her butt, the 20-time VMA winner was actually there to celebrate 40 years of MTV and what the network has meant to her.

MADONNA: 40 years ago, another underdog arrived in New York City, hoping to create something revolutionary. An all-music channel premiered in the middle of the night and called itself MTV. We found each other and formed a bond that changed my life.
